The key to optimizing outdoor fun is to enjoy nature and return indoors unscathed. This includes hydrating, wearing sunscreen and mosquito repellent. But when you’re outdoors, sunscreen without bug repellent is like peanut butter without jam, and that’s just unnecessary evil.

We connected with Dr. Benjamin Barankin, Toronto dermatologist and medical director of Toronto Dermatology Centre, to learn how to safely and effectively keep away mosquitoes and ticks. Turns out, it’s pretty simple.

How to avoid mosquito and tick bites

First, try to stay indoors during dusk and dawn. And when you’re outside, wear light-coloured, looser clothes made from thicker materials. Sounds like an opportunity for Gucci or Prada to do a mosquito-chic collection.

Second, get your DEET on. “DEET is safe and the most effective treatment for mosquito bite (and tick!) prevention, with many years of usage and experience,” says Dr. Barankin. It’s safe for anyone two months and older. So, most of us. It’s also safe for those who are pregnant or nursing.

The DEET concentration should be between 25-30 per cent for optimal results. “Other options are Picaridin (10 or ideally 20 per cent [concentration]) and oil of lemon eucalyptus (30 per cent).”

This pure oil of lemon eucalyptus (also safe during pregnancy, but Picaridin should be avoided at this time) must be diluted before applying to skin. Alternatively, you can look for a natural insect repellent spray that features this ingredient and is ready for immediate use.

Finally, “dump out standing water outside your home. Use screens on windows,” says Dr. Barankin.
