I’m a hot sleeper. And, I can cop to having tried just about everything you can think of to help cool me down. Direct fans, portable A/C, pyjamas with cooling technology, bamboo sheets … the list really does go on.

During one exceptionally restless (read: sweaty) night, I decided I needed to try something different. The time had come to address the very foundation of my sleep experience: my mattress.

I’ve long had an Endy mattress, and have been more than happy with it. It’s comfortable so comfortable in fact that my husband and I had dubbed it “The Cloud Bed.” But we’d reached said cloud status with a mattress topper, which was wonderfully plush — but also hot. And, during the heat of summer, I could hardly stand it.

So, we decided to try the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress.

The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress is a 13-inch, hybrid cooling mattress that is made up of eight layers:

  1. QuickCool cover: A top layer of breathable fabric that features fibres that are cool to the touch.
  2. Casper Signature Foam with cooling phase material: A layer of foam that features Airscape technology to reduce heat retention and regulate temperature while you sleep.
  3. HeatDelete bands: A grid of bands made of 100 per cent graphite that pull heat away from you while you sleep.
  4. Memory foam with AirScape technology: A layer of “cradling” foam that helps to support the spine and body when you sleep, no matter the position.
  5. Engineered latex with zoned support: A second layer of heat-reducing AirScape technology, along with an engineered latex layer for extra support.
  6. Align Foam with gel support pods: A layer of “best-in-class ergonomic comfort” that features up to 82 gel pods placed around specific areas of the body, including the lower back and waist.
  7. Flex coils: Here’s where the hybrid comes into play. This layer features individually pocketed springs to provide additional body support and reduce motion transfer.
  8. ProSupport foam with Casper edge support: A base layer that keeps things firm, this base has a bit of flex to make getting in and out of bed a breeze.

My experience with the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress

How it feels

Let’s start by saying there’s something so satisfying about seeing a king-sized mattress spring up out of a much-smaller (albeit very heavy) box. But packaging aside, I could tell this mattress was different from the minute I laid on it … which was pretty much as soon as the compressed mattress had, well, decompressed.

The QuickCool Cover has a noticeable cool-to-the-touch feel, which adds to the overall element of “ahh” associated with the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow. After sleeping on the medium-firmness mattress for a few months, I can confidently say it boasts really great support, even for a stomach sleeper, and it delivers on its cooling promises.

Favourite feature: Cooling technology

The cooling Snow Technology of this mattress is what makes it stand out from the rest. From the QuickCool top layer to the various cooling technologies that are built into the eight-layer hybrid construction, this mattress is noticeably cooler than anything I’ve ever slept on before.

Even during the hottest night of summer (you know, the one where you feel like you’re quite simply lying in an oven), I found this mattress provided a noticeably cooler sleeping experience.

Least favourite feature: Depth

My only complaint about the Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress is that it’s deep. While not a deal breaker, I found the 13-inch height of the mattress made it a bit of a stretch for most of the king-sized fitted sheets that I put on it. The lovely, cooling top layer also happens to be quite smooth, which means the fitted sheet can slide around a bit if not snuggly fitted.

So, if you’re a tight-corners kind of bed-maker, make sure you get a set of deep-pocket sheets to ensure nothing slips or slides during the night.

Overall recommendation

If you’re prone to overheating during sleep, the Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress might be for you. The various Snow Technology elements on offer in this mattress — from the QuickCool Cover to the HeatDelete Bands to the AirScape Technology — all combine to create a much cooler sleep experience than any other mattress I’ve tried before.

The three firmness options allow for this cooling mattress to suit every sleep preference. I found the Medium firmness was a perfect fit for the varying firmness needs of my husband and myself (he likes a soft mattress, whereas I crave more support).

Unlike with some new mattresses that I’ve tried in the past, there wasn’t a transition period with the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow. I didn’t experience any soreness or stiffness with the mattress change, just sweet, restful sleep. A bonus for those who struggle with sharing their precious sleep time with a disruptively rolling or moving partner, the Flex Coils in this hybrid mattress offer a detectable improvement to motion transfer during the night.
