Sifting through the seasonal trends can sometimes feel like a challenge.

That’s why asking an expert to distil the must-try styles can offer some direction about how to update your fall wardrobe, whether in a small, singular piece or full-on closet overhaul.

“Fall 2025 feels like a nostalgic look at classic archetypes, think: country vibes and preppy looks,” Toronto-based style expert Afiya Francisco said.

This forecast calls for pieces, Francisco notes, including barn jackets, dress shirts, rubber boots and rich colours such as burgundy, navy blue, brown and even yellow.

“A rich ochre is a lovely update,” says Francisco. “It’s a natural and timely evolution from butter yellow. It’s nostalgic and also optimistic.”

In addition to a fresh new shade for your fall-winter wardrobe, Francisco points to a trendy, yet timeless barrel trouser as a universal — or close to it — must-try piece.

“Barrel leg silhouettes are still going strong, and the average eye is becoming more accustomed to the shape, so I think that we’ll see more of it,” the style insider says. “At the same time, skinny jeans are also relevant and popular.”

The return of a slimmer-leg silhouette for jeans and trousers — one that’s likely already hanging in many of our closets at home — taps into a primary principle for Francisco when it comes to facing a seasonal style shift.

“It’s not about reinventing your closet, but about reimagining it,” she says. “There’s no need to go buy a bunch of new stuff. Instead, determine any gaps that prevent you from wearing what you already own and focus on these items when shopping.”

Above all, Francisco advises, add new items with intention rather than as a direct response to trends.

“Think of your wardrobe as your personal curated exhibit,” she says. “It should be cohesive, and you should be able to explain or describe why every piece in your closet was selected.”

“My favourite fall fashion find is the Laid Back Loafers from Poppy Barley. I admire this brand, their commitment to quality, and the fact that they offer a variety of their sizes in a wide fit. The hand-stitching on these leather loafers is exactly the kind of elevated, subtle detail I’m looking for as we move into autumnal styling. They’re the perfect companion to a relaxed trouser, but I’ll also be channelling a preppy look with socks and a short skirt.”

“The Raven blazer by Elisa C. Rossow is amazing. Ethically and sustainably handmade in Montreal out of merino wool — her attention to detail is impeccable. The best thing about this piece is that it essentially styles itself — it can be thrown over the simplest outfit and immediately makes it cooler.”

“One piece I’m really excited to wear this fall is this corduroy blazer from Smythe. They know how to cut a blazer better than anyone and this one is no exception. I love the oversized lapels and the classic shape, it has that heritage feel I always look for when the weather starts to cool down. What makes it even better is how versatile it is. I can see myself wearing it with jeans for everyday or dressing it up when I want something a little sharper. It’s one of those pieces I know I’ll keep reaching for!”

“This style captured my heart immediately because of its shape and versatility. I’m drawn to pieces that stand out on their own and pair perfectly with baggy blue jeans. Aside from jeans and a T-shirt, I would style this sweater with my white vintage structured cotton maxi skirt and my Maguire Lucca Boots.”

“It’s not often that I find myself excited for colder days, but A Bronze Age’s latest fall collection has me longing for their Marrakesh red Phoebe Bomber. I’ve always loved outerwear with a timeless silhouette elevated by thoughtful details, and this bomber delivers exactly that. The cinched sleeves and adjustable drawcord hem give it just the right amount of edge, making it a piece worth coveting. For styling, I’d keep it clean and effortless — think black low-rise trousers that cut off at the ankles, my go-to runners, a taupe toque, and my charm-riddled, off-white Medea handbag.”
