Juno-winning Vancouver singer Karan Aujla is making history again as the very first Punjabi Canadian artist to have performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Aujla performed a medley of singles, including Boyfriend and Gabhru from his new smash-hit album P-Pop Culture, on Sept 9. The appearance follows a whirlwind of firsts for the artist, including one of the strongest global releases for a Punjabi-language album in charting history.
P-Pop Culture debuted at No. 1 on Spotify in India and Pakistan, and No. 4 in Canada. All 11 tracks on the record entered the Spotify Top 200 and the Apple Music Top 50 charts. The release reached No. 1 on Apple Music in all three markets.
P-Pop Culture is currently sitting at No. 3 in the Billboard Canadian Albums Chart, the highest debut for a Punjabi-language album in Canadian history. Aujla’s 2023 album, Making Memories, previously debuted on that chart in No. 5. The local star reached No. 19 on the U.S. Billboard World Albums chart as well.
This puts the singer in the same terrain as such global giants as BTS and Black Pink.
The Tonight Show performance included Aujla’s frequent collaborator Ikky and dancers outfitted in traditional garb to showcase all that is powerful about the exploding Punjabi Wave pop scene globally. Canadian artists are at the forefront of this movement, as evidenced by the new Juno Award South Asian music category.
Aujla exploded on to the mainstream Canadian music scene following his win at the 2024 Junos in the TikTok Fan Choice category. He was already well-established across the burgeoning Punjabi pop landscape with a solid global following for his hooky, upbeat sound.
P-Pop Culture is available through Warner Music Canada/Warner Music India.
Aujla has been selected to headline the first Rolling Loud music festival’s India edition to take place in Loud Park, Navi Mumbai, this November. Aujla isn’t the only Punjabi Canadian artist on the bill, which also includes hip-hop royalty like Wiz Khalifa and Don Toliver. Toronto’s Gurinder Gill is also slated to appear.
