Things to do in Edmonton this weekend: GospelFest, Sungazer, Audrey's 50th and more

GospelFest 2025: Sing it! Edmonton’s first-ever gospel music and cultural showcase is happening, appropriately enough this Sunday, at Citadel Theatre.
Musician and choir director Audrey French is behind this newborn event, which invites any and all to “come together in song, spirit and celebration” under the banner “GospelFest is for everyone.”
“Gospel music is a gift,” says French. “It’s joy that can’t be explained, only felt. GospelFest is about honouring the stories and voices that have carried this music forward — and creating a space where everyone feels welcome to join the celebration.”
A cultural marketplace and food fair spotlighting Black-owned restaurants across the African and Caribbean diaspora are all part of the fun!

Details: 4:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday at Citadel Theatre (9828 101A Ave.), $42 – $68.25 at gospelfestyeg.com
Play It By Ear: Pass it along, another of Edmonton Arts Council’s public art pieces is up for an international CODAaward.
Calgary artists Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett — also behind the vehicular Carbon Copy in the Brewery District — installed the telephonic artwork in 2023 in Butler Memorial Park.
As EAC’s Jenna Turner explains, “The artwork is incredibly cool. Rotary phones that you can actually pick up to call other folks in the park.”
Besides checking it out if you haven’t yet, you can sign up and vote for the piece at codaworx.com through July 11.
More big news coming soon from EAC, stay tuned to this space!

Details: visit any time at Butler Memorial Park (15715 Stony Plain Rd.), no charge
Audrey’s 50th: Continuing its silver anniversary celebrations on Thursday, Audreys Books is doing a special mixer at Yardbird Suite with music by Don Berner, Kellu Alanna, Thom Golub, with readings by Nisha Patel, Wendy McGrath, Bree Taylor, Premee Mohamed and Benjamin Hertwig.
As well, they’ll be announcing their 50 favourite Things list, so if you’re a bookworm, is this ever the apple for you.
Details: 7 p.m. Thursday at Yardbird Suite (11 Tommy Banks Way), $15 at audreys.ca
Sungazer: Mixing jazz, prog metal and electronic with all the feels, this Brooklyn duo is one of the sweetests gigs going at Edmonton International Jazz Festival.
But if metal’s more your thing, Madhouse, Sun of Man, Relics Toque, Rattlysnake and 1312 are doing an evening of loudness Sunday.
Either way, a fine weekend in store between the bricks of this legendary venue.
Details: 7:30 p.m. at Starlite Room (10030 102 St.), $47 at starliteroom.ca
Swirling Southbound action: A super busy weekend of cultural collaboration for the south-side brewery as things heat up in the city, starting with a Sepp’s New York pizza-pie pop-up, Saturday 3 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Then, Sunday, local musician Bobby Yiannnakoulisas’ Mars Time Coffee & Skateboards is doing another Beans and Boards event with Treadwell Clothing, so lots of cool merch to pick up and wear as you stagger around Happy Beer Street’s venues.
Finally, a patio, long-weekend Big Gay Dance Party with DJ Effy in the Sky wraps up Pride Monday night, 8 p.m. – close.
Get ready to fall in love with the Raspberry Hero, with proceeds going to the Edmonton Firefighters Burn Treatments Society.
